Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of gear do you use?
I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark IV camera. My go to lenses are the Canon 35mm f/1.4 , Canon 16-35mm f/2.8, and Canon 24-70mm f/2.8. The macro lens that I use for almost all of the macro shots is the Canon 100mm f/2.8. For lighting, I use a Profoto A1X.
What's some good starting camera equipment?
I've heard really good things about the Canon Rebel as a starting camera, but I've never used one. One of the most important ways to achieve crisp, clear photos is with proper lighting. I believe you can make beautiful photographs with almost any modern digital camera if you know how to light the photograph. A very cheap & effective lighting solution is to use a Yongnuo speedlite.
Another incredibly cheap and effective method is to light your shots with a small selfie ring light. Additionally, you can snag a slightly more expensive LED light which will provide much more light to illuminate the scene .
How did you turn this into a job? Where do I sign up?
I'm very fortunate to have carved out a career for myself through determination and dumb luck. I think with the continued scale of automation, creativity will become an increasingly coveted skill. That said, I highly recommend getting into pet photography as a hobby or side-job before relying on it as a sole source of income.
Do you do photography workshops?
I do! I have given at least a dozen at cat conventions all over the US and Canada. In the future, I plan on doing some online-based tutorials.
